Support for immigration isn’t breaking along party lines

For decades it was political shorthand: “Tell me if you support immigration and I’ll tell you what party you belong to.” But not anymore. Ever since former President Donald Trump and Senator J.D. Vance began spreading false rumors about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, a growing number of Republican leaders have been announcing their support for the immigrants in their states.

NBC News quotes Pennsylvania Republican State Senator Camera Bartolotta as saying Haitian immigrants are playing a strong part in the revitalization of her district. “They’re working legally, paying taxes, raising their children, becoming part of the community.” She condemned false reports of immigrants “bankrupting their cities.”

The NBC report also quoted Rob Rue, the GOP Mayor of Springfield, Ohio as saying immigrant owned businesses have created over 8,500 new jobs there. “We’re a beautiful city, and we need the national stage to pay attention.”
